We have been working really hard on reading, with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz! The kids are really getting into it by making Bubble Maps of each character as we meet them. I will post some pictures of the Bubble Map for Dorothy and the Scarecrow! We learned today that the author doesn't always tell us what we 'think.' For example, L. Frank Baum told us the scarecrow had a small, strawfilled sack head with painted on eyes, lips and nose. After pointing it out, the kids realized that they all had different visions in their heads of how the face looked. Once again, the author told us that the scarecrow had on old boots with a blue top. Some kids thought the boots were black and some thought they were brown. So we are really working on the standard of listening to key details and relating the text to ourselves and what we think. We also realized today that we are going along this journey to Oz WITH Dorothy! Wow, reading is so much fun!
We also took our first spelling pre-test today. Pre-tests are not graded. I will use these test to drive my instruction for individualized spelling tests. I was very proud and impressed at how well each child stayed on task during a 25 question spelling test!
In math, we are working on multiple representations. This means to show a given number in as many ways as possible. For example, we have been in school for 9 days. So a child might write, 9, nine, draw nine tally marks, 8+1=9, 1+8=9. 7+2=9, 2+7=9, 9 cubes, etc.
You can go to our closings tab at the top and watch the children learning to use the words of the standards as they explain to you what they learned about in class today!
Well, I'm off to bed! I can't wait for another great day in First Grade Tomorrow!!!
